Medical Advisory Board

CardioTabs Medical Advisory Board includes board certified physicians and certified health professionals. Leaders in their respective fields, the team is lead by Dr. James O'Keefe, a national key opinion leader in preventive cardiology.

Members of the CardioTabs Medical Advisory Board employ the depth and range of their experience to provide insight  regarding products and formulations, health conditions, medical information, and new developments in the field of medicine. In addition, members write articles, review existing content, respond to consumer questions and are regularly featured on our web site and in newsletters.

James H. O'Keefe, MD, FACC, is Director of Preventive Cardiology at the Mid America Heart Institute, and Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, in Kansas City. His postgraduate training included a cardiology fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. O'Keefe has contributed more than 200 articles to the medical literature and has authored numerous books on cardiovascular medicine, including best-selling medical books, such as "Dyslipidemia Essentials," "Diabetes Essentials," and "The Complete Guide to ECGs." Dr. O’Keefe is Founder and Chief Medical Officer of CardioTabs, a cardiovascular nutraceutical corporation. He lectures extensively on the role of therapeutic lifestyle changes and drug therapy in cardiovascular risk reduction and has authored the best-selling consumer health book, "The Forever Young Diet & Lifestyle" book. He is actively involved in patient care.

Joan O’Keefe, RD is a Registered Dietitian who attended San Diego State University where she received her BA in Food and Nutrition. She then received her RD after practicing as a Dietary Intern at the Mayo clinic.

At age 27, six months pregnant with her first child, Joan was diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Joan’s focus on nutrition and fitness was intensified by this experience. She also felt first hand the healing power of a strong faith, optimism, and a loving and supportive network of family and friends.

Joan does nutrition counseling focusing on weight loss, optimum health and improved athletic performance in adults, teens, and kids. She is passionately engaged in her nutrition counseling and often speaks to schools, teams, families, men’s and women’s organizations, and professional groups. She considers her nutrition counseling a community service and donates all of her earnings to charities.

Dr. William Harris, PhD, was Director of the Lipid Research Laboratories at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) and at the Mid America Heart Institute, both in Kansas City, MO, for 22 years, and was on the faculty of KUMC and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. In 2006 he became the Director of the Cardiovascular Health Research Center at Sanford Research/USD and is a Research Professor of Medicine at the Sanford School of Medicine, University of South Dakota in Sioux Falls. Dr. Harris' research focuses on omega-3 fatty acids and cardiovascular disease. He has been the principal investigator on 5 omega-3 related NIH grants, and is currently evaluating omega-3 blood tests as a possible new risk factor for cardiovascular disease. He currently has 200 publications.

Becky K. Captain RN, MSN, CLS, BC, FNP-C, is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner who specializes in Preventive Cardiology. Becky has nineteen years of Cardiovascular nursing experience in both acute and outpatient settings and is considered one of the leading Nurse Practitioners in Preventive Cardiology. Becky is also a Board Certified Clinical Lipid Specialist. For the past ten years, she has developed the Preventive Product Line of St. Luke's Cardiovascular Consultants. She has also expanded her practice to include more than 2,500 annual visits. Becky serves as a consultant for the CardioTabs Medical Advisory Board.
